About

My name is Johanna Knyn

Most people call me Joh. I am a psychologist, author and educator with a focus on dissociation, complex trauma and neurodiversity-affirming practice. My approach is relational, paced and evidence-informed — guided by current research, clinical expertise and the wisdom of lived experience — with a strong commitment to ethical, grounded and supportive care.

My Approach

My work centers on supporting people living with trauma, dissociation and complex experiences of self — and to supporting the allied health clinicians and other professionals who walk alongside them in their healing and recovery process. In my experience, informed, compassionate and well-resourced therapeutic relationships can be transformative, and those offering support thrive when they too feel resourced and confident.

With close to a decade of experience, my work has focused on supporting people with complex trauma and dissociative experiences. Alongside clinical practice, I provide supervision and professional learning for clinicians and organisations wanting to expand their confidence in trauma-responsive, neurodiversity-affirming and dissociation-informed care. I also develop and publish resources for clients and professionals, including self-published materials and a workbook released internationally through North Atlantic Books; the first adaption of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for folks living with dissociative identities.

My approach focuses on the importance of relationship and is guided by ethical decision-making, evidence-based phased trauma principles and an appreciation for how the nervous system shapes our experiences — for both clients and clinicians. I value practice that weaves together research, clinical wisdom and lived experience, and that’s sustained through curiosity, reflection and humility.

Outside of my professional roles, I value authenticity, connection and continuous learning. Curiosity underpins the way I move through both work and life, and I’m committed to creating spaces where people feel respected, understood and able to be fully themselves.

“Curiosity invites us to keep learning, about our clients, ourselves and the work — and through that process, authenticity naturally emerges.”

In conversation

I’m occasionally invited into conversations with other clinicians, educators, and podcasters to explore dissociation, trauma-informed practice, and working ethically with complex presentations. These discussions offer a window into how I think about this work and how I engage with nuance, uncertainty, and lived experience.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land where we work and live. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present. We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Elders of all communities who also work and live on this land.
